Herald of Creation, was inspired by somethings I’ve seen around the web lately, I go the idea to work with this stock from Rob Shields. He did a piece that I found really interesting and inspiring. I actually feel I may do a series of “Heralds”, I’ve always liked the concept because I’m a fan of the Silver Surfer and Galactus comics that Marvel puts out and draw some inspiration from that. This image got some great feed back on both the Advanced Photoshop and Photoshop Creative website, as well as Deviant Art. My ideas for additional Heralds are:

Roberto Blake Featured in Photoshop Creative 60

Hey everyone, I”m really excited about this post. I was recently featured in another photoshop magazine. Photoshop Creative recently started a Reader’s Gallery section and was kind enough to include some of my artwork in issue 60 of the magazine, which you can find at pretty much any book store in the magazine section or oder from their website. I can’t tell you how happy I am about tall the wonderful exposure my art has been getting lately.

As creatives we always seek some level of validation from our peers and the people who inspire us. We also have a desire to share our work with as many people as possible. In this way seeing your work published in a major venue is a great boost to morale for any artist or designer. The pieces selected were some of my own personal favorites.

Touched was inspired by a series of songs on my playlist, particularly “Touched” by VAST. I had a lot of fun with this and was able to bring a lot of raw energy and chaos to this composition. Doing the brushwork for the background took quite awhile to do. The retouch work was also quite fun for this image. I wanted to do something different as far as the colors and I’m satisfied with how those choices turned out.

I had meant to post this sooner, but as some of you may already know I ad the pleasure of having some of my work featured in Photoshop Creative Magazine Issue 54 as part of a spread encouraging creatives to post their work to the Photoshop Creative Gallery. I’ve been an avid reader of Photoshop Creative for quite sometime so it was a real treat and honor to be featured in their magazine. Interestingly on the page next to the one I was featured on Alena Lazareva who I had the pleasure of interviewing a few months early was also featured!

Aside from the sense of pride and accomplishment in seeing my work printed in one of my favorite publications it also made me take myself a lot more seriously. As creatives we all try to keep in mind that others are viewing our work, our development and our growth, but once your work reaches a such a broad audience it really bring this home for you.

I received a lot of positive response from this and some new interest from this feature, and it has definitely been encouraging. I would say to any other digital artist reading this to always keep striving to achieve goals and produce the best work that you can, and submit to as many venues as possible, you never know how these things will turn out or where they will lead.

Its obvious when you first look at this image that it was inspired by none other than the Jabbawockeez, the Season 1 Champions of America’s Best Dance Crew, who also stared in the movie Step Up 2 The Streets, who have taken the nation by storm.

I love break dancing, hip hop, and all forms of artistic and expression, and this image in which I am actually the model, allowed me to unite those passions in an interesting and unique way!

I had a friend snap a few pictures of me while I was doing a few moves in this mask and decided to use them for a series of Photo Manipulations. In this work I wanted to get back to lighting effects as they work so well with this type of image. I also wanted to add various other elements to convey motion, such as the arrows and the lines. It was also vary different to be in front of the camera for a change, but an interesting experience, I think I will try being my own model more often as it has opened up some interesting possibilities.

As for the Jabbawockeez mask, it was actually left over from my Halloween costume I wore while clubbing this year, which was a hit. I have some other images that I will post when they are finished but I just couldn’t wait to share this with you all. I’m a huge fan of the Jabbawockeez and I really enjoyed working on this image.

Visual Effects
This image required a series of layer for each of the individual effects as well as some intense masking, I would say there was anything in particular I had to do that I hadn’t used in previous images before as far as technique, I think it was more of a matter of execution in which I think I’ve improved quite a bit. In away this comes back full circle to “Dark Leap” one of my first images in this style. I’ve mostly improved on the techniques I used for that image and combined them with everything else I’ve learned since then.

Today’s interview is with Indonesia based Graphic Designer Ferdi Rizkiyanto, also known as Pepey. You probably remember him for one of his more popular photo-manipulations, a PSA demonstrating the threat of Global Warming. Ferdi’s graphic design work is amazing and has exceptional attention to detail.

Lets start with an introduction. Could you tell us about yourself, where you’re from and how you got started in the design field?

My real name is Ferdi Rizkiyanto, I’m from Jakarta – Indonesia, when I was in high school my older brother introduced me with Adobe Illustrator & Adobe Photoshop, then when I was in college, got myself in-love with 3D software such as Poser and Bryce for quite a while.

I’ve seen that many of your designs use 3D in combination with lighting effects, is there any particular reason?

When I was still hooked with 3D I’ve always interested how to make a realistic CG artwork, and lighting fx is one of the most important essence to do it. And now I use that reference every time I need it with my concept.

What would you say have been some of your strongest influences as a designer and digital artist?

since I just a kid, I always admire and inspired by sci-fi, horror and superheroes stories, it’s amazing how they can make fiction into something that look so real and believable.

Were there any barriers you’ve had to overcome in entering the field and trying to develop as an artist?

Well, it’s a tough and fast world out there, the only barrier is myself, if I want to keep up with it, I’ll just have to keep upgrading my skill, keep trying to push myself to be better and keep learning new things.

What would you say is the largest difficulty you’ve encountered when working on a design, and how did you overcome it?

Sometimes it’s hard to get an idea or inspiration to visualize the message that I want to deliver, usually I just began to do more research about it and hopefully gonna get inspired on the process.

What has been your most valuable resources as a designer?

The Internet, it’s the never-ending resource of knowledge and inspiration, from the most basic design tutorial to the “out of the world” inspiration are there.

What would you say is the hardest part of being a designer?

For me, there is no hardest part if you love what you do, every obstacles is a whole new adventure that I have to overcome, and in the end I’ll have a valuable experience by going through it

Are there any other designers or artist that you draw inspiration or advice from?

So far what would you say is your favorite piece you’ve that you have created, and why?

The Global Warming PSA – Time
Beside the message itself, the design process of that particular piece really helped me to upgrade my skill and sharpen my attention to detail.

If you could use design to influence or change the world in a positive way, how would you go about it?

If I could use it, then I’ll do it by making everyone to take their part and responsibilities to help stop any more damage that has been done to our beautiful planet.

What do you hope to achieve design wise in the next 5 years?

Really don’t know what to answer/hope for, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see
