Being able to produce a good image in Corel Draw doesn't make it a superior program. The point was that when a higher level of work is required by designers and agencies Corel doesn't cut it. Its not just about being able to make one good image, Corel doesn't have the features the cross compatibility or the range of formats that illustrator does, or the ability to generate bar or pie graphs from excel data. It doesn't fit into the work flow with InDesign or Photoshop nearly as well, and it also lack many of the features regarding typography, color meshes and 3D text and shapes.

This is even more true in Illustrator CS6 with new features like Gradient on Stroke and Image Trace (replacing Live Trace).

Hi Roberto,

Great article! I totally agree, the iPad was/is a huge game changer not only to the design community but to every sector out there, you name it mechanics, Doctors, Airlines, Education the list goes on, but at the end of the day it primarily falls back to designers to create for this still new and booming mobile device market.

If its ok with you I'd like to feature your article with full credits on my Facebook Fan page: www.facebook.com/rawcre8tive I won't post it without permission so if its cool with you please drop me a email to let me know, thanks.

I am an Adobe Illustrator but also a Corel user. At my university we learned to do things with corel, but ever since i bought a mac i just had to learn illustrator. My belief is that Ai is a much more powerful program and more professional. Sure you can create professionaly with corel too, but ai in my opinion is way more superior.

At my job we use both illustrator and corel. Everytime we have to work on corel file we just curse! Files take like ages to load, even small ones some times. A lot of times it takes like a year to copy and paste something, and very often the program crushes if your dealing with a big file.

On the other hand Ai almost never crashes, it can handle big files perfectly and just makes your job much easier. Some people say that its a complicated program but this is something i really don't understand. How can Ai be complicating when you know how to use photoshop, it almost the same in terms of the program UI.

Some of you wrote that ai is the industry standard because of good marketing etc. That might be right but allow me to give you a bit of food for thought, if Ai wasn't a great program would it still be alive today?

Corel is like Quark, slowly dying because it made no innovations...

I'm a fan of running AMD processors, every design pc I've used with Intel processors hasn't performed nearly as well or lasted nearly as long. If you use a computer and parts recommended for gaming, your Photoshop performance is nearly guaranteed.

Hi Roberto,
Nice article, and really useful.

I've a few questions. Why would you partition Application Level drive? What's the partition strategy (e.g. OS in one partition, and Application incl. PS in another)? Will this improve performance? What if I use SSD drive for Boot+Apps?
Will be really appreciative if you could answer.
