Today’s Featured Artist is someone I have been watching on Deviant Art for quite a while. His work is nothing less than stellar, captivating, and inspiring. I’m actually surprised he doesn’t have tens of thousands of views to his Deviant Art page because as you will see his work is just that good! His name is Rodney Hart and he is a Graphic Designer based out of the UK.

Looking Up Now by Rodney Hart

Manipulating our eye directions through the use of various elements forcing our focus back to the main figure, something I can definitely appreciate. I love the high level of contrast here, the choices in lighting and the retouch work was all very well done. The execution of the visual effects, their placement, and just the main choices made around them is very interesting, particularly the light spiral toward the top, it gives the idea of imagination as does the light from her eyes. This image is visually interesting, technically well done, and stirs different emotions when you look at it, as well as can tell many different stories…

The vibrant colors and swirls in this image are fascinating and really jump out at you. The emotion in this image leaps off the screen or page. This is the sort of image that makes a portfolio shine, its beautiful but accomplishes a purpose, looking at this you know its a piece the couple is going to cherish forever, constantly want to share with friends and family and put on display. The ability to create something like this is what design houses, studios, and ad agencies look for.

This is a very imaginative piece of work that also demonstrates and eye for detail and color. Its interesting how many elements and effects are present here and work so naturally together. The surreal nature of this image still feels quite natural which demonstrates how well it was executed. Amazing! Something else I noticed that I appreciate in this image is how much detail there was in the concept. It really does feel as if the elephant plunged into the deep end here, just looking at this picture I can almost here the splash, and feel the water, and image powerful enough to connect with our memory or our other senses is very hard to accomplish.

I love the combination of visual elements in this piece and how balanced it feels. The concept while not completely original was done in a very unique and interesting way. The fact that the effort was made to retouch the model is something I noticed right away and appreciated, something I’ve always admired in work of artist like Rob Shields. What grabbed me right away about this piece was the fact that it had contrast and elements that manipulate my eye direction forcing me to focus on the main subject. It something very subtle but that I have always found myself paying attention to or looking for in images. This was very well done.

Right off the bat this image conveys dynamic motion and is exciting, and displays a certain energy. In this one I feel the visual balance is slightly off, maybe more of the model could have filled the page or more elements could have been added, it just feels that way compared to the other pieces I suppose which demonstrated great visual balance. The choice in colors here were well done and I feel using the dark background adds a level of depth and serves to highlight the color and lighting effects as well as the sense of movement. This was of course very well done.

Just wanted to say thank you again for the time an effort you put into writing this article. Really appreciate it and hope you’ll ‘watch this space’ as I’ll be launching my own artwork portfolio site soon (to replace my current one which I poorly coded myself…). The comparison to Rob Shields is flattering to say the least. I can only dream of being THAT good one day, the guy’s a legend.

    Thanks again.

    Rodney Hart.

I myself can only hope to be as good as Rob Shields one day, but I think the compliment is warranted as you have learned to pick up on quite a few things that help make the difference between decent Digital Artist, and Legends like Rob, with time I could honestly see you becoming THAT good!
